JUVENILE BATHING BEAUTIES

Highlight of the Napier 30,000 Club’s entertainment programme for holidaymakers is the junior and senior bathing beauty contests, held in the Sound Shell on the Marine Parade, Napier.

On a brilliantly fine Saturday afternoon (January 2nd), over 100 juveniles ranging in age from two to fifteen years filed on to the Soundshell stage and were judged in age groups.

Christine Walker of Upper Hutt, youngest bathing beauty winner, goes all coy before the battery of cameras aimed at her.

Place-getters in the 2- to 3-year-old group were, from left, Kaye and Carolyn Stowe of Hastings, Christine Walker, Susan Martin of Napier, and Vivienne Christie of Napier.

A special section for 5-year-old boys was won by the he-man flexing his muscles on left, Harvey John Bryan of Napier; second was Kim Gallagher of Hastings.

Christmas Parties

Another Christmas has been celebrated in traditional style, and “Santa Claus” managed to be in a thousand different places at once – and with a different beard every time – but the adults enjoy a visit from St. Nicholas just about as much as do the children.

At the HASTINGS SERVICEMEN’S ASSOCIATION Christmas Party Santa (Bob Morse) is treated to a duet by Doug Wilson and Bill Marr (President of the Association).

A Day in the Country for Old Folk at W.D.F.F. Party

The Raukawa W.D.F.F. invited old folk from various old folks homes in the district to their Christmas party, and they all thought it was wonderful to get out into the country. “Santa” was there and presented each home with a Christmas cake.

The Management and “Back Room Boys” of 2YZ and 2ZC

In our last issue we featured the “Air Staff” of Hawke’s Bay’s Radio stations, who, along with the “Backroom Staff”, make up the 62 men and women who plan and execute the many duties necessary to present, on every day of the year, thirty-two hours of broadcasting, and whose activities are so intimately interwoven with the family life of our readers throughout the Province.

In this issue we bring a cross section of the “Ground Staff” and their work.

FANCY DRESS DANCE AT HASTINGS HOSPITAL

As always, the Hastings Hospital Nurses spared no efforts in designing their outfits for the Hospital’s annual fancy dress dance.

The band was not backward either when it came to originality.

The only two girls there who had a “tearable” time.

COACHING SCHOOL FOR SWIMMERS

As part of the coaching school held at Napier, Clive and Havelock North, a selected team of pupils from Northern Hawke’s Bay Clubs, under the direction of Mr. V. T. Parkhouse of Hamilton, gave a demonstration of the methods used during the week-long instructional school. This was before a well attended gathering of interested spectators at the Clive Baths.

Mr. V. T. Parkhouse, who was assistant New Zealand coach at last year’s national coaching school, explains a point to the audience.

SURF CARNIVAL AT WAIMARAMA

An elaborate sand-castle welcome greeted visitors and competitors to the 1960 Surf Carnival at Waimarama Beach, and with teams from near and far competing in drill and surf life-saving, the carnival was again worth the trip out there.

The holiday spirit was very much in evidence and here a “strongman” feat is in operation as a young man “pushes” his girl friend into the sand.

The inevitable dog joined in the married ladies’ race but only managed to gain second place.

Two proud sandcastle sculptresses, Kathrin Lewis of Hastings and Glenda Mapuhi, await the judges in the popular sandcastle building competition. Each year a larger and larger area is required for this event.

It’s not quite as easy as it looks, as anyone who has tried surf riding, even lying down on the surfboard, will tell you, but to an experienced surf rider like Charles Lake of Paekakariki it is no trouble at all.

HASTINGS BRIGADE IN FULL SCALE EXERCISE

Four officers and twenty-five firemen of the Hastings Headquarters Fire Brigade were up early one Saturday morning last month when, from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., they took part in a full scale fire-fighting exercise at the Hastings Hospital. During the exercise one appliance and a crew from Havelock North stood by at Headquarters to deal with any emergency.

In apparent disorder, hoses snake away from the pump in all directions, but the firemen know just where to and where from each hose is coming or going to.

A patient at the hospital, Jack Gillies, as an ex-Hastings fireman, was very interested in the exercise from a professional point of view.

The hospital was completely surrounded by hoses, this time directed away from the building.

Most boys maintain that it is pretty good leaving school anyway, but when a dinner is laid on for them too, well, that really is something, and that is just what the Hastings Boys High School did as a farewell to those boys leaving school and setting out on their respective careers.

NAPIER Beauty Contest

The second section of the bathing beauty contest, for the title of Miss Hawke’s Bay, attracted one of the largest crowds ever to be seen in front of Napier’s Sound Shell. Appropriately enough the competition also attracted a record number of entries, totalling twenty-nine in all. A difficult task confronted the judges, but when 17-year-old Colleen Barry of Hastings was proclaimed Miss Hawke’s Bay for 1960, she was greeted with a roar of approval from the crowd.

Jill Manning of Hastings was judged second, and, LOWER RIGHT, Cynthia Baines of Yorkshire gained third place.

WINDSOR PARK CAMPERS SPORTS DAY

One of New Zealand’s most popular camping grounds, Windsor Park, Hastings, is blessed with a waterway, which as well as enhancing the beauty of this spot is ideal for boating and canoeing. Each year a boating race for the campers is organised, with the accent on humour.

This young lass just couldn’t get the hang of it and might just as well have gone swimming.

We are assured that this piece of underhand interference did not get past the stewards.

Boats that were built to hold one, and at the most two, small children, are brought into use and when the adults climb into them and start paddling furiously around a marked course, as these girls are doing, that’s when the fun starts. Most of the competitors in this race have somehow managed to stay afloat.

Even if a competitor does manage to finish without getting wet he, or she, may still be in for a ducking in any case.

Somewhere in Navy parlance is the term “In line astern”. The Navy no doubt would describe this formation slightly differently, but the boats are one behind the other and going down by the stern.

The mixed doubles are off to a rather uneven start, and it looks like one competitor is about to be “run through” with a paddle.

One big splash, and the baths were well and truly opened.

In our last issue we featured an article on the building and completing of the staff baths at the Awatoto Fertiliser Works. Now the baths are in full use, and our cameraman went along to the opening ceremony which was a great day for everyone concerned with the project, and especially for the children.

After the opening, a realistic “accident and rescue” had more than a few spectators quite worried. An “intoxicated” spectator (Des Walsh) staggered up to the edge of the baths and toppled in, but instead of coming to the surface he stayed at the bottom. Lead weights and an aqua-lung previously placed in the baths enabled the victim to “stay put”. Les McLean dived to the rescue and Noel Wilson is seen dragging the presumably drowned man “ashore”.

The diving board was tested by those who knew how to use it.

“Diving in may be all right for some, but I think I’ll just take it in easy stages.”

Looking like a badly bent “helicopter-tank” this unique piece of machinery is in fact a box-thorn hedge cutter and is used extensively in the Taranaki district. The converted Valentine tank, with the cutting knives revolving out to the side, simply trundles along parallel to the hedge and, hey presto! all nicely trimmed. (Not available for back-yard hedges.)

MEMENTO PRESENTED AT BIRTH IS USED AT 21st BIRTHDAY

In 1938 Otto Jonson, coach to the 3rd grade Hastings High School Old Boys football team, was presented with a silver mug by the team on the birth of his son Gary Jonson.

Now, 21 years later, Gerald Hooper, captain of that team, drinks to the health of Gary on the occasion of the latter’s 21st birthday.

The Napier St. Augustine’s Garden Party took a new twist this year with most entertaining results when men of the parish staged a “mannequin parade” at the St. Luke’s Hall, Vigor Brown Street, Napier.
